CUCKOOLANDER BEATING MYSELF UP

Having conquered being an international pop star, Charlie XCX is turning her hand to being a label boss as she launches Vroom Vroom Recordings this week. Keeping it within the her musical family, the first release features tracks from her, the electronic RIVRS and intriguing Londoner Cuckoolander, who Charlie XCX also manages and who previously played bass in XCX's touring band. On this release Cuckoolander is particularly ear-catching as melancholic piano piece ‘Beating Myself Up’ is the absolute polar opposite of both Charlie XCX and RIVRs’s offerings. Instead of full throttle chart hits, her twinkling keys and stunningly delicate vocals make for dreamy and nicely unsettling listening. An interesting new direction from the few tracks she has out, such as the rockier 'Dumb Diddy Dumb’, it’s refreshing to see an artist offer an alternative pop sound alongside some of the industry's most exciting talents. -SJ
